I'd welcome your help in keeping this blog lively, useful and up-to-date with the world of womag fiction - and non-fiction. Please send me any news directly related to women's magazine market. I'll credit anyone who sends anything I use.  Don't forget to include a link to your own blog, fb page etc if you'd like that shown.

I also want to hear your own news - if you've sold your first story or have a thought or question my other blog readers might be interested in, I'll probably be happy to host a guest post. Short guest posts about article and filler writing, or providing writing prompts are also welcome.

Feel free to ask womag related questions (as comments to blog posts, please - not via email or Facebook. You can do this either as a comment on any posting about the magazine in question, or on the monthly 'Your Go' post) Although I don't guarantee I'll be able to answer every questions, I'll try to help.  This book is a great source of writing advice which I strongly recommend – and I'm hardly biased at all!

Although I'm happy to use guest posts by those who read and comment on this blog, the posts, unless on a subject mentioned above, must all relate to writing for women's magazines - not writing in general, not women's issues, not women's fiction but writing for women's magazine.

If you'd like to do a guest post, please email me first (mainly to check I don't already have something on a similar topic scheduled). When you submit the post, I'd require the text either in the body of the email or as an attached .doc or .ODT and for images to be as attached JPEGS. Please also supply any relevent links.

Please note I do not work directly for any magazine mentioned on this blog. I do not accept short stories and do not offer feedback on your work.

I sometimes give talks to writing groups, or run workshops.

Hi
my name is Viv, a complete novice at writing,
hoping you can clear something up for me, after re-writing a short
story correctly with Capitals, paragraphs
My writing used to contain a lot of dot.... dot.....dot........
after each sentence.
reading the guidelines for submitting a story to Take a Break [Fiction Feast]
it says a typed story? is that a typewriter or the keyboard on the laptop
then printed,

It can be either, Viv. If you have it on your computer then send a printout as that will be easier to read than a typewritten piece - and you want to make things as easy as possible for the editors.

Hi patsy . Can you buy readers digest at the newsagent ? Or is it only ny mail ?

Could we have a list of magazines that pay for "fillers" please and

Is it ok to use a "pen " name when writing fillers , of course giving a correct name and address , in case one was a winner ? If a cheque was

Sent I wouldn't want the cheque to be in my "pen" name !

Many thanks. Jan

Hi Jan,

Sorry, no idea about Reader's Digest - I don't recall seeing it on sale anywhere.

I have done a few posts on fillers and invited blog readers to do the same - neither have recieved much in the way of response! However I will add more when (if!) I get the time.

Fillers are generally personal stories or opinions, so I imagine that magazines would prefer your real name to be used, but if you'd rather not then you could explain that and ask for it to be published under a pen name.

Dear Patsy, could I ask for something to be included on the blog please? A list of ISSN numbers for each of the women's magazine would be hugely helpful for when we enter our work onto ALCS.

Good idea. I'll see what I can do.

Hi Patsy,
We lived in Africa for a few years and have a multitude of stories to tell.
I have been trying to contact a site 'Featureworld' with a cook off queries prior to my sending in the first story I have.
I am wondering if you knew of this site and are they any good.
My immediate assumption, as they have not gotten back to my requests is that they are not up to any good!

My questions to them are - Do we sign any contract/agreement?
What commission do they take?

patsy, any help you can give would be great.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Sorry, Rob I've not come across this organisation. I do think you're right to be concerned about a lack of response to your perfectly reasonable questions.

Willow asks
Has anyone had any acceptances at Women's Weekly since the new regime change?

Patsy said...

Yes, Willow – though they're (understandably) taing longer now.
